Wordless Wednesday Follow-Up

The picture I posted for my Wordless Wednesday entry today is a small cropped section of a photo I took yesterday in Washington, DC. That is where I went to visit with my brother and sister-in-law. I have a feeling some of you may have already guessed the destination between the Washington Monument in the background and ABW’s comment about my trip.

I have quite a few stories to tell and am going to try and post about them more or less in order, with the exception of this post. We had just started walking toward the Smithsonian Museums when we heard many sirens quickly approaching. I didn’t get my camera out in time to catch everything, but I’m just dorky enough to think it was worth it to try and get photos of a motorcade. The things I will do with a digital camera that I would have never “wasted” film on!

I have seen motorcades before- including Presidential motorcades- so this wasn’t a “first” for me or anything. I wanted pictures anyway. In the time it took me to get the camera out, turn it on and aim at the motorcade, the police on motorcycles had already passed. There were 5 or 6 of them on white motorcycles with sidecars. I have a strange fascination with sidecars, so I am kind of bummed I missed out on photographing them.

This is the first picture I was able to take:

This is the picture I cropped for the WW entry. The motorcycle police had just passed us. I managed to get one more picture. This one is mainly of the black SUVs.

The motorcade sighting started an interesting discussion. We were all wondering, just who qualifies for motorcades in DC? Beyond the President, Vice-President, and visiting heads of state, who “rates” a motorcade? They can’t have them for everybody who thinks they are important. No one would ever get anywhere! It doesn’t make sense for it to be everyone in Congress- between the House and the Senate there are far too many of them (I know they all don’t actually show up for work every day, but still).

This one was clearly not the President, VP or a visiting head of state (no flags). I wondered if maybe all cabinet members and some members of Congress like Speaker of the House, Minority Whip, etc. also get motorcades. My SIL suggested anyone under Secret Service Protection plus all Senators. I can see the legitimacy of Secret Service Protectees “rating” a motorcade, but they would never get away with having them for all Senators but not for the members of the House of Representatives. What do you think? Feel free to comment if you have either actual knowledge or just want to join us in random speculation.

  1. Maybe they were looking for you? They didn’t want you hanging out with the masses. Being friends with me has its perks!

I can’t imagine that they would provide that much manpower to escort Senators around town either. I vote for Condi.
